Natural rubber (NR) solvent adhesives often face challenges such as insufficient initial tack, weak holding power, and suboptimal coating quality during actual application. These issues can significantly affect the adhesive’s performance, ease of use, and reliability in end-use scenarios.
A practical and effective solution is to blend 10%–25% of SIS (Styrene-Isoprene-Styrene) into the NR adhesive formulation. Here’s how SIS helps improve key properties:
Improved Coating Control: SIS can adjust the viscosity of the adhesive, making it easier to control during application. This results in a more uniform coating layer, avoiding uneven thickness and improving both application efficiency and final product appearance.
Enhanced Initial Tack: Grades such as SIS YH-1106 and YH-4016 significantly boost the initial tack, allowing the adhesive to quickly grab and fix to the substrate on contact. This is particularly useful for temporary or alignment-sensitive bonding.
Boosted Holding Power: If long-term bonding strength is a priority, SIS YH-1209 is recommended. It enhances holding power, maintains strong adhesion over time, and helps reduce adhesive residue, preventing contamination of the bonded surface.
Balanced Performance: For applications requiring both initial tack and holding strength, SIS YH-1105 offers a well-balanced improvement across both dimensions.
NR solvent adhesives modified with SIS demonstrate superior performance and are ideal for use in applications such as interior decoration (gap filling and trim masking), automotive masking tape for painting, and packaging tapes. The improved tack and coating properties help them adapt more effectively to various usage conditions.
